And How Did We Celebrate America's Birthday?

July 4th, Trip 4 Day 5

One of my favorite holidays, July 4th, finds us struggling to set up a system where our cats won't die from heat stroke. Housed in a home with no electricity, therefore no air conditioning, we were determined to find a way to help them survive the Oklahoma summer heat.

With our usual morning routine of waking and having breakfast at the hotel, we headed out with a plan to open up more windows, and placing hardware cloth over the window to allow maximum air movement. We also brought a second Jackery solar battery so two fans could be running at the same time. From home we brought a flexible solar panel set up to add power to recharging the two batteries.

My sister with a large heart for animals knew nothing about how to set up the batteries and the solar panels, so we had to make sure the system was as easy as pushing an “on and off” button to use the system as designed to keep them cool. Setting everything up, in turn, was no easy feat for us, because it was very hot inside the trailer, and it was just as hot if not hotter working on the outside in the sun. With the trailer placed on the edge of a forest of trees, we couldn’t wait for the sun to travel to the back side, which cast a shadow and shade onto the trailer.

Even with the second set of flexible solar panels in place on the roof of the mobile trailer, and all the windows now having the ability to be stay open 24/7, it was still too warm in the bedrooms for the cats. When we initially arrived and began working on the housing situation for them, we placed the majority of the cats in the master bedroom, and separated a few of the more feral cats into the smaller bedrooms on the opposite side of the house. This gave the feral cats more space, and less stress, where they didn’t have to deal with other other cats, and had some areas that they were able to “hide”.

The mobile home, through the years since my sister bought the trailer, it became a storage unit, housing items that Sis salvaged from properties that were set to be demolished. One such item was wooden framed windows with weathered edges in arrested decay. The treasures all had an important role in her mind's plan for a new fresh project in the future. These treasures occupied nearly half of the large living space. But as the heat of the day increased, it was evident that the large room had more windows, more air flow and much cooler temperatures than the master bedroom where the cats were being housed. The simple question was, “Can we move all the salvaged treasures into the master bedroom, and move the cats and their kennels from the master bedroom into the large living room, which is much cooler”. My sister, keeping in mind that she didn’t want to have overheated dead cats in the mobile home, gave us the green light to switch the cats into the larger room, and her salvaged treasure into the master bedroom. We got right to work, tomorrow.

Because it was July 4th and we were going to celebrate by eating apple pie and ice cream. What a beautiful country that we celebrate with a scrumptious dessert! Happy Birthday America!
