When Traveling, Look Closer for Angels in Disguise

His real name isn't important, but we will call him Jimmy.

It's been a long day of driving, so we were definitely ready to check into the hotel. We had opted for the longer drive today so that tomorrow would involve less driving time and more task time. It seemed to make sense, but by the end of the day we were beat.

Walking toward the office, I noticed a handwritten sign on the door: "No Vacancy." We were in the small town of Weatherford, Oklahoma. It wasn't that late, only 5:00 p.m. Usually hotels run out of rooms much later.

Nevertheless, I had a prepaid reservation, so I knew our room was secure.

As I opened the door, there was a large group of people standing around the reception desk and sitting in the lobby area. The lobby provided a cozy atmosphere, with a stone fireplace separating the dining area, where I could see even more people, evidently from the same group, waiting.

One man stood alone behind the desk—Jimmy—intently staring at his computer as he wiped the sweat from his brow. Looking at him confirmed why the sign was on the door. He was overwhelmed and the hotel was booked.

He politely reassured the people waiting for service that he was the only person on the shift and would get everyone into a room. Several people reassured him right back that everyone was waiting patiently and that he should just complete his job one customer at a time.

A few minutes later, an older lady came in, handed him a key, and said, "The room hasn't been cleaned."

He stared at her in disbelief, apologized profusely, and promised he would find her a clean room. Then he dashed out the side door. Within a few minutes he returned, assigned a room to one guest, and moved immediately to the next customer.

The next person Jimmy was going to help didn't realize it was his turn to be helped, because he and his co-workers were deep in conversation about work schedules for the next morning, so Jimmy quickly pointed to me.

"I'll be with you soon."

I smiled at him reassuringly, and continued to wait patiently. Honestly, dealing with tired patrons isn't something I would be able to do and admired him for his calm focus.

A few members of the group caught our interaction, glanced at us both, then looked at Jimmy and said, "Oh, we're all patient. She's patient too. It's all good."

One lady then turned and looked at me as I lifted my head from my phone and smiled.

"I'm patient. I'm good”, I noted.

Then the lady did something I have never encountered before.

"Do you want a hug?" she asked of me.

Her friend next to her turned around and added, "We love hugs. Do you want a hug?"

I responded with a smile. "I love hugs."

The two ladies embraced me in a bear hug of warm comfort, like a grandmother reassuring a child that the knee scrape will stop hurting soon. As we stood there, hugging, in the middle of a hotel hobby crowded with people, it reassured each other that we were all on the same team, on the same page, going through the same situation, and that we were going to be kind to each other.

In my sixty-plus years, I have never, ever, encountered

an event like that.

We were all tired. We all needed a room. A man was working hard, running in and out of the office, double-checking whether rooms had been cleaned before assigning them, then completing reservations as quickly as he could.

The obvious question in reflection was: Why is that such a rare situation?

There were so many good things happening within that twenty- minute encounter: patience, sincerity, effort, and comfort.

Often when people are in this type of situation, they verbally express their frustrations then look around the room to find agreeing faces to support their expression as they continue to spew bitterness. Not here, not once. Not from anyone.

Jimmy then pointed at me and quickly asked my name as he found our reservation.

"I'm going to give you the key so you can go relax. Your room is already paid for. Will you come back later to complete the reservation paperwork?"

"Of course," I replied. "That'll give you time to settle the other customers, and I'll come back when you're finished."

"Great! Thank you!" he exclaimed.

He handed me room keys, and I quickly jumped into our truck and parked it in front of our assigned room. William and I took our belongings inside and we made ourselves comfortable.

It was a clean room with décor that was unusual for a hotel. Although none of the furniture matched, it was large and stately, providing ample storage and made quite an impression.

An hour later, I revisited the office.

Most of the group had gone, but there were still several people Jimmy needed to check in, so I retreated to our room and ate a snack from our food supplies.

By 8:00 p.m., I needed to shower and lie down. I was thinking that if Jimmy still wasn't ready to complete my paperwork, I would simply tell him I'd do it in the morning.

Fortunately, Jimmy had finished helping all of the other patrons.

"You're the last one I need to take care of from the rush," he said.

I lightheartedly responded, "Let's do this thing, because I've got to go to sleep."

As we were doing the paperwork, I heard the bell on the front office door ring, alerting Jimmy to a new customer.

"Do you have any rooms available? Everything is sold out," the older gentleman pleaded.

"I do, and I'll find you something. Just give me a minute," Jimmy responded.

"Oh, thank you," he said, visibly relieved.

The encounter struck me as strange because earlier there had been a sign on the door that clearly stated, "No Vacancy."

We finished the paperwork, thanked each other, and I purposely exited through the front door. As the door closed behind me, I turned to look for the No Vacancy sign.

It was gone.

Somehow Jimmy had found rooms for all the people in the large group and still had more available for weary travelers arriving later that evening.

That was amazing!

As I was returning to my room, I encountered several people from the group that had waited so patiently and gave me a hug earlier.

I asked where their group was from and where they were heading.

They explained that they were bus drivers training for the FIFA games in Kansas City and were on their way to learn how to support the large crowds expected there.

They pointed to rows of buses parked in a lot across the street, waiting like soldiers for their next command.

"Those are our buses," one of them said. "We have to leave at 4:00 a.m. to get to Kansas City on time, and we needed this hotel because the last hotel was a mess."

She didn't go into detail about the previous hotel's issues, but by the look on her face, Jimmy and this hotel had been a Godsend for a desperate group of people who were simply trying to meet the requirements of their jobs.

And I bet all the soccer fans who will eventually occupy those buses will never know what Jimmy did to help those drivers arrive safely and on time to their jobs.

Maybe that's the lesson.

If we look a little closer, we may discover that angels in disguise aren't as rare as we think. They might be standing behind a reception desk, driving a bus, offering a hug, or simply choosing patience when frustration would be easier.

The people who quietly keep the world moving are often the people we never notice at all.

Lessons Learned and Moving Forward

  • Sometimes the most important people in a moment aren’t obvious while you’re in it—you only recognize their impact when you look back.

  • Kindness under pressure doesn’t eliminate stress, but it changes the entire experience for everyone involved.

  • It’s worth paying closer attention to ordinary moments, because that’s often where the “angels in disguise” show up.

If you pause for a moment and think back on your own travels—or even your own life—who helped you through a difficult moment without ever receiving credit for it?
